Game to Be Green

What is Game to Be Green?

Game to Be Green is the renewable energy strategy game where players seek to become the renewable the energy moguls of the future. Players buy and manage business assets to replace the Main City’s coal-fired power generation with renewable energy and energy efficiency. The winner is the player with the most income-producing assets (measured in “Energy Tokens”) and cash when the game ends.

It is designed for 2 to 6 players aged from 10 to 110. For younger players, an adult mentor is recommended to guide this younger player. However, Game to Be Green is NOT suitable for anyone under 5 years old due to the small pieces that are used.

The game is designed to be played using very low cost components with moves being controlled through an internet site. Click here for Instructions for obtaining the board and components.

Game to Be Green has two main phases, the BUILD stage and the BENEFIT stage. If time is limited, the game may be played over two sessions, the BUILD being the first and the BENEFIT being the second.

The goal of the BUILD stage is to acquire a successful suite of renewable energy power businesses and to connect those businesses to the Main City. An energy business is awarded Energy Tokens and begins to earn income only when it is connected to the Main City.

The goal of the BENEFIT stage is to complete connection of any businesses not yet linked to the city and to earn income.

The winner is the player with the most assets and income at the end of the BENEFIT stage (or at any earlier point as agreed by all players).

A goal for the players as a whole is to replace all the electricity generated by the coal plants with electricity generated by renewable energy and energy efficiency. This does not end the game but we suggest that all players give themselves a small reward (such as a chocolate) if this is achieved.

Setting Up the Game

Place all the Energy Tokens on the area of the board marked Coal Power Plants. These represent the energy output of each business and income is paid based on the number of Energy Tokens held.

Place all the Asset cards to one side. These will be distributed as the assets are sold.

Each player chooses a colour, and takes all of the ownership token of that colour to mark ownership of assets.

Leave the powerline tokens in a box and place it next to the board. These will be placed on powerline spaces on the board following the instructions on the cards during play.

Playing the Game

Decide who goes first, either by a throw of dice (not supplied), or any other agreed method such as paper-rock-scissors. From that person, play then goes clockwise.

The BUILD stage:

The BUILD phase consists of 50 moves displayed at random. These include 10 bonus Knowledge questions which give extra income and a free turn if the player answers a trivia-type question correctly. The knowledge questions vary each time the game is played.

Go to, start the game and click "Start the Build Phase".

Read aloud the description of what has happened, click "Continue" and follow the instruction.

If the instruction specifies that a powerline is to be placed on the board, the player can choose to do this before or after the other action on the card. A powerline token is placed on one of the powerline symbols on the board.

If an asset is for sale, it may be purchased. The Asset Card is taken and one of the player's coloured Ownership tokens is placed on any available asset square of that type on the board to indicate which asset is owned.

A player may not purchase an asset at any stage of the game if they have insufficient funds. Any player who must pay more than they have in hand, must auction any asset they own to the highest bidder (or offer that asset for $30 million to the other player in a 2 player game). The payment must then be made and the play proceeds. If no-one purchases the asset, then that player must retire from the game. In a 2 player game (or if only two players are left in a game), this ends the game.

The next step is to connect this power business to the Main City by having a powerline token on every powerline symbol between the power business and the Main City. Note that both the Energy Efficiency and Smart Grid Businesses are already connected because they are located within the city.

Once a power business is connected, turn the Asset card to the connected side, take the nominated energy tokens off the Coal Power Plant and place them on your Asset Card. This represents power that your business is producing (or has saved) that no longer needs to be generated by the Coal Power Plant.

After 50 moves, this stage is complete. (Take a coffee break.)

The BENEFIT stage:

Any remaining assets are now auctioned to the highest bidder, with bids commencing from the next player in turn and proceeding in a clockwise direction. Assets are auctioned in the order of the lowest token rating to the highest token rating. Once a successful bid is achieved, the next asset is auctioned and the bids commence with the next player in turn. At any time, a player may choose not to bid. If there is a full round of no bids, then the asset is passed in. Assets that are not purchased in one round are left unsold.

Go to the Benefit Stage on the screen and click "Start the Benefit Stage". Play recommences with the next player following on from the Auction. Each player in turn reads aloud the description of what has happened, clicks "Continue" and follows the instruction.

The game ends when all 50 BENEFIT actions have been taken.

Who Wins?

At the end of the game, each player counts the number of Energy Tokens and multiplies that by 100. The cash remaining is added to this number to give the final total. The winning player is the one with the highest value. In the case of a tie, the ultimate winner is the one with the most Asset cards (including any not connected).

The group goal is achieved when all energy tokens from the Coal Power company are removed from the board. This is a win for everyone and is highly achievable, both in the game and on Planet Earth!!
