While proposals like overhead bike lanes and new bridges could certainly improve urban cycling, they are expensive. Copenhagen has come up with a number of simple, inexpensive “micro designs” which can also make a big difference – things like footrests and railings at intersections allowing cyclists to wait without having to put a foot down, ramps on stairs, conversation lanes, rubbish bins tilted towards cyclists and  an app and website allow citizens to map potholes and other urban obstacles.
