Mitsui's Wind/Current Generator
Mitsui’s Wind/Current Generator

Mitsui Ocean Development and Engineering Company has developed the world’s first hybrid wind and marine current generator.

The device consists of a floating, vertical axis wind turbine with a “keel” made up of a current turbine.

The omnidirectional Darrieus wind turbine.rotates regardless of the wind direction.

The generator is located at the base of the turbine. This gives the system excellent stability from the low center of gravity, as well as easy access for maintenance.

The Savonius current turbine consists of split-cylinder-shaped buckets which can harness weak currents and will rotate in the one direction regardless of current direction. This turbine is insensitive to marine growth on the buckets and is harmless to the marine ecosystem, as it rotates slowly at the speed of the current.
